1966 – Flying Spice Box, Yossl Bergner

April 11, 2023

In his fanciful works, Yossl Bergner (1920-2017) often used objects to symbolize the human condition. In the foreground of this piece at the Mishkan Museum of Art in Ein Harod, the top of an ancient wall frames a mysterious and stormy landscape. The floating and somewhat dented spice box symbolizes the wandering of the Jewish people, who carry their sweet-smelling heritage with them, even as they are forced at times to wander.
