Israel’s 9/11 — Iran’s Threat and Regional Responses

October 15, 2024

Hamas’ terrorist assault Oct. 7, killing 1,200 and kidnapping more than 240, was the worst slaughter of Jews since the Holocaust, but the night of April 13-14 could have been worse when Iran attacked Israel with more than 300 drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles. Only a multinational defense of aircraft, ships and anti-missile systems prevented a catastrophe. Israel appears to have limited its reply to a strike on a military site, but the threat of regional escalation remains as the Gaza war continues. Addressing Iran’s threat and the implications of the regional response are Dr. Meir Litvak, the director of Tel Aviv University’s Alliance Center for Iranian Studies; Dr. Eran Lerman, vice president of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security; and Dr. Matthew Levitt, the director of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s Program on Counterterrorism and Intelligence. Moderating CIE’s 28th webinar on the war May 1 is Dr. Ken Stein, CIE’s president and an Emory University emeritus professor of Middle East history, political science and Israel studies.
