A British army officer, Wingate was sent to Palestine in 1936 to counter Arab violence against the British and Jews. A fundamentalist Christian who embraced the prophetic vision of a Jewish return to Israel, he established and trained Haganah night squads. He trained such leaders as Yossi Harrel and Moshe Dayan and dreamed of leading an Israeli army. Under Arab pressure, the British transferred him in 1939.
