Born Kollek Tivadar in 1911 in Hungary, he makes aliyah in 1935, as a result of his father’s strong Zionist convictions. A close associate of David Ben-Gurion, who represents the Haganah in Washington in the late 1940s, Kollek serves as Mayor of Jerusalem for 28 years. He likewise establishes the Jerusalem Foundation, which is responsible for over 4000 development projects within the city. In addition to his work developing the city, he is known and revered for fostering communication between Arab and Jewish inhabitants of the Holy City.
