Abraham D. Beame takes the oath of office, becoming Mayor of New York. He is the first Jew to hold the position. Subsequent Jewish mayors of New York are Edward I. Koch and Michael Bloomberg. Three-term incumbent Koch is first elected in 1978, and Bloomberg takes office in 2001.
