With U.S. mediation, Lebanon and Israel sign a Trilateral Framework Agreement predicated on the Lebanese army taking control of all Lebanese territory, including the southern area abutting the Israeli border, where Iranian proxy Hezbollah is entrenched. Lebanon seeks sovereignty; Israel seeks security for its northern population. Both Iran and Hezbollah vigorously oppose to the agreement, which is quietly supported by other Arab states, including Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia. (source)
