After a two year investigation, the Shin Bet arrests members of Gush Emunim, a Jewish settlement organization, headed by politicians Eliezer Waldman and Rabbi Moshe Levinger. Its plans included attacking Palestinian targets, including the Dome of the Rock, a key prayer mosque in Jerusalem. A week after the arrests, police raid locations in the Kiryat Arba settlement outside of Hebron, uncovering a massive cache of stolen IDF weapons and explosives. They are to be used in carrying out the planned attacks. A bombing of the mosque would have inflamed world-wide Muslim opinion against Israel, and given the religious settler movement, a claim to rebuild the temple destroyed in 70AD.
