“The 22nd CIE/ISMI Educator Workshop on Modern Israel couldn’t have taken place at a better time – during the unprecedented internal unrest occurring in Israel right now. It was so valuable to take the time to come together with other educators and leaders to pause, study, and unpack what is going on in Israel. Through a historical, economic, and diplomatic context, the team and the superb presenters shared valuable information. The sessions expanded our knowledge base and equipped us with skills and resources to share with our communities. I came out of these three days of learning more hopeful and optimistic than I had been beforehand. I felt a new-found energy and motivation to share my learnings with others, with the hope of ensuring a bright future for the state of Israel and its people. A highlight for me in this year’s workshop was a session by Col.(res) Dr. Eran Lerman, Dr. Alan Dowty and Aviv Ezra, moderated by Dr. Ken Stein. This group spoke about Israel diplomacy and the changing nature of relationships with neighbors, countries, and superpowers over the past years. Another fascinating session was led by Prof Doron Shultziner. He gave an excellent overview of the protests and civic action in light of the proposed Judicial reform. I also really enjoyed the informative presentation given by economist Dr. Paul Rivlin. He spoke about Israel’s economy from 1950 to the present, with some projections of the future. The days were packed with examples and hands-on suggestions of how to share the learnings with students of all ages. I have been attending workshops and seminars with Prof. Ken Stein and Dr. Tal Grinfas-David at the CIE since 2005; each time I expand my knowledge, I gain new perspectives and am introduced to new resources. This year I was also inspired and thankful to see the website that they had developed over the years and to learn about, the number of people using it so far. This evaluation was conducted when the one-week workshops were held under the auspices of the Institute for the Study of Modern Israel. In July 2008, CIE inherited the choreography of the one-week workshops.*
