Ciechanover shared the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 2004 with Israeli Avram Hershko and Jewish American Irwin Rose for showing the role of the protein ubiquitin in breaking down other proteins in cells. He was the first of four Nobel laureates to graduate from the Technion and served on the Technion faculty. In 2018 he opened the Ciechanover Institute of Precision and Regenerative Medicine in Shenzhen, China.
