Recruited by Si Kenen, Lauter worked with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in San Francisco for more than 50 years, from chief volunteer recruiter to regional director to a consultant training staff across the country. She was active in civil rights, working with the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. She co-founded the New Israel Fund. She visited Israel more than 35 times.
