King Hussein of Jordan dies; Abdullah II, his son, becomes the new Jordanian monarch. Like his father, Abdullah II maintains a cordial if not close relationship with Israel. Both countries see the instability around them as a more than sufficient reason to keep their ties close. Jordan still strongly advocates the establishment of a Palestinian state, fearful that Israel might again argue that Jordan is Palestine.
