While researching at the Technion in Haifa, Avram Hershko and Aaron Ciechanover win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The prize is given to them for discovering ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation, in which a molecule attaches to proteins that are damaged or need to be replaced, and signals the cell to destroy the protein.
