Egyptian President Anwar Sadat Visits Jerusalem
November 19, 1977

Stunning those throughout the world, President Sadat visits Israel, noting that he has broken the psychological barrier between the Arab world and Israel. In addressing the Israeli parliament, he calls for no more war and seeks Israeli withdrawal from all the territories Israel won in the June 1967 War. Bi-lateral talks continue in Cairo and Jerusalem but eventually stall, whereupon the Carter administration invites Israeli and Egyptian leaders to negotiate agreements at Camp David in September 1978.
