The thirty-seven day air war commences against Iraq, followed by land war in February. Iraq is ejected from Kuwait within 100 hours. Iraq hits Saudi Arabia and Israel with SCUD missiles; Israel chooses not to retaliate militarily. The Gulf war severely divides the Arab world, with Syria, Egypt, and Gulf Arab states opposing Saddam’s invasion. Saddam Hussein remains in power until overthrown by an American led military coalition in April 2003.
