After Arabs riot against Jewish settlements and immigration in 1920 and 1921, the Jewish leadership in Palestine decides to establish a self-defense force to protect Jewish outposts. Self-defense is the Haganah’s initial motto, but gradually in the mid-1940s it adopts a more offensive posture in protecting Jewish settlement and the coming state. It is the precursor to the Israel Defense Forces.
