Israel Extends Municipal Boundaries of Jerusalem
June 28, 1967

Having taken the portions of Jerusalem in the June War, previously held by Jordan since 1948, including the Old City, Israel expands Jerusalem’s boundaries. The US publically “deplored” Israel’s action as a “hasty and unilateral move” that the US would not recognize as valid; yet in a National Security Council evaluation, the US acknowledges that dislodging Israel from conquered Jerusalem would be next to impossible.  On July 30, 1980, the Israeli parliament declares Jerusalem the Capital of Israel.
