Like Tunisia, Libya, Bahrain, and Egypt, Syria too finds itself in a domestic struggle between inhabitants who are rebelling against an authoritarian dictator. The Bashar al-Assad regime clings to power using brutal, mass killings of his own population. No outside forces like the EU, UN, or Arab League make any moves to stop the carnage or the flight of refugees to Turkey, Jordan, and elsewhere. Israel’s national security preparedness level is perpetually elevated with Syria’s political outcome still unknown years later.
