United Nations Security Council Resolution 242 is passed, calling for Israeli withdrawal from territory taken in the recent conflict, a solution to the refugee problem, freedom of navigation through international waterways, recognition of territorial integrity and political independence of all states in the region, the appointment of a UN mediator (Gunnar Jarring), and for a lasting peace in the region. Palestinians are terribly dismayed that this resolution refers to them as a “refugee” problem and not a political issue. Resolution 242 becomes the political framework for all future negotiations and treaties. (source)
