Despite Israel’s last ditch efforts to thwart a condemnatory resolution, UNESCO deliberately passes such a resolution that ignores Jewish ties to the Temple Mount in Jerusalem; Judaism’s most sacred holy site, and physically controlled by Israel since the June 1967 War. The resolution, which passes with a vote of 26 in favor, six against, and 25 abstentions, is aimed at debunking Israeli claims to ancient-biblical, Jewish ties to Jerusalem. Muslim negation of Jewish claims to Jerusalem is integral to Palestinian/Muslim efforts to delegitimize and diminish Jews as neither a people nor nation, only an inferior religion. Taking to Facebook to comment on the controversial resolution, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu states that UNESCO has become a “theatre of the absurd” for making “another delusional decision,” that questions Jewish historical continuity to the Holy Land far before Islam or Christianity.
