The US and the Soviet Union release a joint statement on Middle East peace negotiations, to the dismay of the Egyptians and Israelis who don’t want the Soviet Union involved in the peace process. The US does not confer with either Egypt or Israel prior to the release of the joint statement on resumption of a peace conference. (source)
