As a member of the Alignment party, Navon, a political figure since 1951, becomes Israel’s fifth president. A fluent Arabic speaker, born in Jerusalem in 1921, Navon, most notably serves as a member of Knesset, deputy speaker of the house, chairman of the foreign affairs and defense committee and chairman of the executive committee of the World Zionist Movement. He is a close affiliate of both David Ben-Gurion and Shimon Peres. Navon dies in Jerusalem on November 7, 2015.
