Porath specialized in the history of Palestinian nationalism as a professor of Islamic and Middle Eastern studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His books include “Palestine Jewry and the Arab Question, 1917-1925” and “In Search of Arab Unity, 1930-1945.” He ran for the Knesset with left-wing party Meretz in 1992 but opposed the 1993 Oslo Accords and supported Likud in 1996.
