Harold Wilson, 1916-1995

Labor Party leader Wilson was the British prime minister from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976 and was one of Parliament’s strongest supporters of Israel, where he made social democratic friends. He spoke up for Israel in May 1967 when Egypt closed the Straits of Tiran. As leader of the opposition during the October 1973 war, he argued unsuccessfully for Britain to drop its arms embargo and resupply Israel.
