Yehudah Leib Levin, 1844-1925

A Belarus native, Levin was a Jewish Enlightenment poet who wrote in Hebrew on socialist themes. Concerned with Jewish lives in Russia, Levin wrote one of his most famous poems, “Daniyel be-gov ha-arayot” (“Daniel in the Lion’s Den”), about Zionism and antisemitism. He wrote for Hebrew and socialist publications. A part of the Hibbat Zion (Lovers of Zion) movement, Levin supported Jewish immigration to Eretz Yisrael instead of the United States.
