This striking installation, part of The Burning Sea exhibit at the Israel Museum until June 2023, comes from an ongoing project by Sigalit Landau (b.1969) in which she immerses a variety of objects in the Dead Sea. These immersed objects (such as a dress like that worn by Hanna Rovina for her role in The Dybbuk and more generic items like boots) become encrusted with salt and acquire an otherworldly quality. On the one hand, the Dead Sea serves as a site of preservation for the immersed objects and of healing for the many who visit it, and these qualities come to the fore in Landau’s work. At the same time, the unique attributes of the Dead Sea require its preservation, a fundamental subtext of her works. (Copyright the artist; collection of the artist)
