As Jordan’s king, Hussein tried to annex the West Bank and eastern Jerusalem while ruling them from 1948 to 1967. He lost everything west of the Jordan River after he attacked Israel to support Egypt and Syria in the 1967 war, but he largely kept Jordan out of the 1973 war. He withdrew claims to the West Bank in 1988 while maintaining stewardship over the Temple Mount. He signed a peace treaty with Israel in 1994.
